Oceans have been warming at almost half the rate of land – here’s why (WEF)

  • Land has a smaller “heat capacity” than water, which means it needs less heat to raise its temperature significantly.
  • Oceans can cool themselves in a warming climate by evaporating water with only a small temperature increase.
  • Yet continents typically have limited moisture availability and so evaporation is constrained.
